Researchers in Wales synthesize methanol from crude glycerin

Plantations International News Researchers from Cardiff Catalysis Institute in Wales have developed a way to increase the yield of biodiesel by using simple catalysis to convert glycerin from the transesterification process into methanol. The researchers reacted glycerin with water, to provide hydrogen, with a magnesium oxide (MgO) catalyst. The reaction involved a simple one-step process and could be performed using mild conditions. Since biodiesel is formed by reacting fats, oils and greases with methanol, the researchers estimate up to a 10 percent increase in biodiesel production when using methanol produced from crude glycerin. In addition, the newly gained methanol is derived from [...]

EU extends import duties on US biodiesel until 2020

Plantations International News             Cookies are required to use this site. Please turn them on! This website requires javascript to be enabled. September 15, 2015 The EU will extend anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on imported US biodiesel until 2020, according to Reuters. The duties were extended in an EU attempt to maintain its defence against trade in renewable fuels. The EU argues that should the duties, originally set in 2009 on certain US biodiesel producers, be lifted, the resulting increase in imports could damage European biofuels production. At issue was a US tax credit of $ [...]

Cardiff University researchers improve biodiesel yields

Plantations International News Researchers at Cardiff University have devised a way of increasing the yield of biodiesel by using the waste left over from its production process. Using simple catalysis, the researchers have been able to recycle an undesired by-product of the vegetable-oil-to-biodiesel conversion process, and convert this residue into an ingredient to produce even more biodiesel. It is believed this new process will have significant environmental benefits by improving the yield of biodiesel in a sustainable way that doesn’t require the use of additional fossil fuels and could potentially reduce the costs of the biodiesel production process. The results were [...]

MBI receives biomass pre-treatment technology patent

Plantations International News MBI, a US-based biotech company, has been granted a patent (patent no. 9,102,964) for its Afex biomass pre-treatment technology by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The Afex technology enables energy producers to utilise the nearly 2 billion tonnes of biomass left on the fields annually after the harvest of crops such as corn, wheat, and rice and turn it into feedstock for cellulosic biofuels and animal feed. The newly issued patent expands the Afex technology intellectual property portfolio, which Michigan State University (MSU) – and later MBI, who is commercialising the technology on behalf of MSU – have been developing since MSU Distinguished [...]

REG opens biodiesel refinery in Grays Harbor

Plantations International News Renewable Energy Group (REG) has formally opened its latest biomass-based diesel refinery REG Grays Harbor, Washington, US. REG leaders were joined by state and local business, government, and community leaders for a ceremony marking the transition to REG’s ownership of the former Imperium Grays Harbor 100 million gallon nameplate capacity biodiesel production and terminal facility. Daniel J. Oh, president and CEO of REG, noted at the event that the plant, employing 39 full-time employees, is the company’s 11th and now largest, biorefinery and its first west coast production facility. ‘The transition has been seamless thanks to the dedicated [...]
