EU extends duties on US biodiesel as US imports surge

Plantations International News After a year-long investigation, the EU has extended duties on U.S. biodiesel, a decision that the U.S. biodiesel trade association says is unfair and protectionist. EU Regulations 2015/1518 and 2015/1519 were published Sept. 15 in the EU Official Journal. The regulations extend both the antidumping and antisubsidy duties on U.S. biodiesel for an additional five years. The duties originally went into effect in July 2009 after complaints that subsidized B99 from the U.S. was flooding the European market, causing injury to EU producers. MSU, PHYCO2 partner in algae development, CO2 absorption

Plantations International News Michigan State University and PHYCO2 have entered into a partnership to develop algae technologies produced from PHYCO2’s revolutionary and patented concept that promotes algae growth and sequesters, or captures, carbon dioxide from power plant emissions. Universal Biofuels converts bulk customers to B100 in India

Used cooking oil from KFCs in India to be converted to biodiesel

Restaurants India Pvt Ltd., which operates KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut in India, has signed an agreement with Advait to collect its used cooking oil (UCO) from KFC in the Andhra and Telangana regions.  Yum! is aggressively expanding its presence in India. Advait, the only UCO collector in India certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, will convert the UCO into biodiesel or export the feedstock for biodiesel processing in Europe. Pacific Biodiesel receives Platinum Certified Clean Fleet award

Plantations International News Pacific Biodiesel Logistics, the grease collection division of Hawaii-based biodiesel technology firm Pacific Biodiesel, has received the Platinum Certified Clean Fleet award from Blue Planet Foundation and Honolulu Clean Cities as part of the new Hawaii Clean Fleets certification program. The platinum certification is the program’s most prestigious level, reserved for public or commercial fleets that exclusively use renewable fuels or electricity for all vehicles in their fleets. Researchers in Wales synthesize methanol from crude glycerin

Plantations International News Researchers from Cardiff Catalysis Institute in Wales have developed a way to increase the yield of biodiesel by using simple catalysis to convert glycerin from the transesterification process into methanol. The researchers reacted glycerin with water, to provide hydrogen, with a magnesium oxide (MgO) catalyst. The reaction involved a simple one-step process and could be performed using mild conditions.
